Do not pour boiling or very hot liquids into glasses. Only use hot liquids in coffee mugs or glass measuring containers that are made to withstand high temperatures.
Make sure to have the correct, nonflammable utensils.
Do not put extremely hot food on a plastic plate.
Before starting any recipe, place all ingredients on your work surface to be sure you have everything the recipe calls for ahead of time
Follow all instructions and don't skip any instructions when cooking and following a recipe.
Don't touch any surfaces, such as a stove burner or oven in case they are hot!
Allow a reasonable amount of time for steaming hot food to cool off before eating.
Long sleeves can catch on fire near a stove, roll them up or wear short sleeves!
If necessary to touch hot items, use a nonflammable pot holder or oven mitt.
When cooking with grease, have a splatter shield handy.
An apron is useful to avoid splatters on clothing.

Fire safety tip:
If there is a kitchen fire, be sure everyone gets out of the house.
Report the fire by calling 911.
Never ever use water to put out a grease fire.
For grease fires: If the fire is very very small you can use a fire extinguisher. It is a good idea to have a fire extinguisher within easy reach of the stove/oven. If the fire is inside of the pan/pot, the easiest way to stop the fire is to place the lid on the pan. this will suffocate the fire. a large amount of baking soda can also be used to extinguish a fire. Because of the possibilty of fires when cooking it is best to always have a grown up with you.
It is best to leave the use of a fire extinguisher to an adult but anyone who uses a stove or oven should learn how to use a fire extinguisher just in case.
